Overview
Top church leaders in the Holy Land—including Greek Orthodox Patriarch Theophilos III and Latin Patriarch Pierbattista Pizzaballa—have accused Israeli authorities of facilitating and enabling settler attacks against Taybeh, the only entirely Christian Palestinian village in the West Bank
During their July 14, 2025 solidarity visit, they condemned fires set near the historic 5th-century Church of St. George and its cemetery, attacks on homes, destruction of farmlands, and threats such as a billboard declaring, “there is no future for you here”
They claim that despite repeated emergency calls by residents, Israeli police failed to intervene, raising concerns about impunity for extremist settlers. They demanded an immediate and transparent investigation
Key Concerns
Religious Heritage at Risk: Fires near the archaeological Church of St. George and cemetery are seen as deliberate attacks on Christian heritage
Land and Agriculture Under Pressure: Settlers have led cattle onto local farmland, destroyed olive groves, and occupied fields—severely damaging residents’ livelihoods
Declining Christian Presence: Christian leaders warn the violence is prompting emigration from the area, accelerating the disappearance of this longstanding Christian community
International & Religious Response
A delegation that included diplomats from over 20 countries (EU, UK, Russia, China, Japan, Jordan, and others) visited Taybeh to observe and document the damage firsthand
The Higher Presidential Committee for Church Affairs called for global pressure on governments to enforce international protections for Palestinian Christians
Prominent figures in the Church of England spoke out, urging the UK government to suspend trade agreements and sanction violent actors to uphold justice and peace in the region
What They’re Demanding
A transparent and immediate investigation into settler attacks and law enforcement’s inaction.
Holding perpetrators accountable, including Israeli authorities.
Global solidarity with Taybeh’s Christian community—calls for prayer, media attention, and political advocacy to preserve their presence in the Holy Land
Why This Matters
Taybeh is not only the last entirely Christian town in the West Bank—it’s a symbol of thousands of years of continuous Christian faith in the region. Many see the events there as a deliberate strategy to erode
