The FBI is now conducting a “parallel” investigation into the suicide of Mica Miller, the South Carolina pastor’s wife who was found dead in Robeson County, North Carolina, on Apr. 27, according to the sheriff’s office.

Miller, 30, was found dead in Lumber River State Park from a gunshot wound that authorities determined was self-inflicted.

On Wednesday, Damien McLean of the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office told PEOPLE that the FBI’s field office in Columbia, South Carolina, is conducting a “parallel investigation” into the matter but is not probing Mica’s death.

McLean declined to provide any information about the probe.

Mica’s estranged husband, Pastor John-Paul Miller, was not in North Carolina when she died.

McLean told PEOPLE that the sheriff’s office does not believe John-Paul was involved in Mica’s death.

Kevin Wheeler, a spokesperson for the FBI’s field office in Columbia, South Carolina, told PEOPLE that the office is “communicating” with Robeson County officials but would to comment on whether there is an investigation.

Mica’s death was ruled a suicide, which did little to dispel rumors among her loved ones that foul play was involved, but Robeson County officials have repeatedly asked individuals following the case not to speculate about the high-profile death.
