There has been a years-long legal battle to demolish the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, where 26 people were killed in 2017.
Monday was a sorrowful day in Sutherland Springs.
Heavy machinery came on the scene after a judge last month cleared the way for First Baptist Church to demolish the sanctuary where 26 people were killed on November 5, 2017, in the bloodiest church massacre in U.S. history.
John Riley has resided in Sutherland Springs his entire life.
He expressed his grief over the decision to demolish the sanctuary, which has been preserved as a memorial since then.
Riley, 86, has been a member of First Baptist Church for his entire life.
In addition to the 26 deaths, more than 20 people were injured in the 2017 incident.
Riley remarked that the surviving and those who died are near to his heart.
What was once regarded as a community pillar is no longer standing after heavy machinery razed the structure, despite efforts by some families to preserve it.
In 2021, church members agreed to demolish it, but some families in the village of less than 1,000 people filed a lawsuit, requesting a new vote on the building’s fate.
For many members of the community, the sanctuary provided solace.
In early July, a Texas judge granted a temporary restraining order requested by some families.
However, another judge then dismissed a bid to prolong the injunction, triggering the demolition.
In court filings, attorneys for the church described the building as a “constant and very painful reminder.”
Attorneys representing the church contended that it was within its rights to demolish the memorial, while the attorney for the families who brought the action stated that they were only asking for a new vote.
In their case, the plaintiffs claimed that some church members were unlawfully removed from the church roster before to the vote.
In a court filing, the church refuted the lawsuit’s allegations.
