Christians Can Hold Prayer Meetings: Court Ruling
What happened:
On June 20, 2025, a two-judge bench of the Allahabad High Court in Uttar Pradesh, India directed state authorities to allow and officially consider Christians’ requests to hold prayer gatherings, after consulting with local police. The court emphasized that such gatherings are not illegal, and are protected by the constitution, provided they maintain public order

Background:
Christian groups had filed petitions stating that local authorities and police had been routinely denying prayer meeting permissions and sometimes branding them as “religious conversion” attempts—a serious charge under Uttar Pradesh’s anti-conversion law enacted in 2021. That law provides up to 20 years in prison, although no proven conversion cases have emerged

Court’s guidance:
Authorities must reconsider and formally respond to fresh applications from Christians willing to conduct prayer meetings.

They should base decisions on law and police input rather than assumptions or rumors

Reactions:
Pastor Sukesh Kumar, one petitioner, said he needed court intervention because police barred gatherings, and leaders faced wrongful arrests on conversion charges—cases that are expensive and prolonged to resolve

Pastor Joy Mathew, a rights advocate, said the court’s order empowers Christians to challenge arbitrary denial and false conversion claims

🧭 Putting This in Context
Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state (~200 million), is 80% Hindu with Christians under 0.5%.

Since the 2021 anti-conversion law, more than 400 cases targeting Christians have been registered—yet none have led to proven conversions

Advocates believe the law is frequently misused by local officials and fringe groups to intimidate minorities, hampering their right to religious expression.

✍️ Why It Matters
Upholds religious freedom: Reinforces constitutionally guaranteed rights under Article 25 and 26.

Greater accountability: Pushes officials to make lawful, transparent decisions, preventing arbitrary denials.

Sets a precedent: Offers a legal framework believers can reference in future cases under similar restrictions.
