On October 10, 2025, Pastor Mingri ‘Ezra’ Jin of Beijing Zion Church was taken by Chinese authorities, handcuffed alongside dozens of other church leaders and coworkers. They are now held at Beihai Detention Center in Guangxi Province, accused of ‘illegal online dissemination of religious information.’
Pastor Jin has faithfully served the Church since 1989—training ministers, planting churches, and preaching the gospel with courage and compassion. His wife, Liu Chunli, says that despite years of family separation and persecution, Pastor Jin remains committed to Christ and the mission of the Church.
The United States Government, through Secretary of State Marco Rubio, has condemned this detention, highlighting it as a stark example of the Chinese Communist Party’s hostility toward independent house churches. The U.S. is calling for the immediate release of Pastor Jin and all detained leaders, emphasizing the right of people of faith to worship freely.
This is a defining moment for the global Church. The question is not only about faith in China—it’s about standing with our brothers and sisters under persecution, in prayer, and in action.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, peace be with you!
I am Liu Chunli, the wife of Pastor Jin Mingri of Beijing Zion Church, and I earnestly ask all our brothers and sisters to pray fervently for him.
On October 10, Pastor Jin was handcuffed and taken away by a group of police officers. Along with him, dozens of other pastors and coworkers were also arrested. They are now detained in the Beihai Detention Center in Guangxi Province, charged with the so-called crime of “illegal online dissemination of religious information.”
My heart is heavy with shock, sorrow, anger, and fear. Yet I must reaffirm this truth: Pastor Jin has done nothing wrong. He has only done what a faithful shepherd should do — preaching the gospel in and out of season, whether through traditional means or through the internet, proclaiming Christ to those willing to follow Him. What he has done is what every true pastor in the universal Church is called to do. He is innocent!
Pastor Jin Mingri accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior after he came to faith in Christ in 1989 and soon devoted himself to serving the Church. After graduating from Peking University in 1990, he worked for two years in a foreign company. Although he enjoyed a comfortable life, he felt a deep and unmistakable calling from God to become a preacher. In 1992, he resolutely entered Yenching Seminary, beginning his lifelong service as a full-time minister.
In 2002, Pastor Jin sensed a burden to further his theological training. That fall, he enrolled in Fuller Theological Seminary in the United States, pursuing a Doctor of Ministry in Pastoral Studies, and later earned his doctorate. During his time in the U.S., Pastor Jin was deeply burdened to raise up more Chinese ministers. In 2007, he returned to Beijing and founded Zion Church.
Since his calling, Pastor Jin has devoted his entire life to two things:
1. Diligently training the next generation of preachers, and
2. Faithfully preaching the gospel and planting churches, tirelessly and passionately for decades.Whenever he met believers who loved the Lord, he encouraged them to become preachers, saying it was the most honorable calling one could pursue. He poured out his personal resources to support and nurture those willing to serve. Many have told me, “It’s amazing that Zion Church has so many young, capable, and insightful pastors!” I believe this is largely because of Pastor Jin’s steadfast commitment, his optimism, and his encouraging spirit — drawing young ministers into mutual devotion, forming a vibrant community of faithful and gifted shepherds.
Pastor Jin is the gentlest and most cheerful person I have ever known — not only toward me but toward everyone he meets. We have been married for nearly 35 years, and in all our life together, he has never once lost his temper with me. Instead, he always notices my emotions with sensitivity and cares for me tenderly.
In 2018, when Zion Church came under heavy government pressure, Pastor Jin and I went to the United States, hoping to ease the burden on the church. Yet when he saw that the persecution against the church remained severe, he made the courageous decision to return to China to face it himself. Though I was deeply worried, my faith in God and respect for his calling compelled me to let him go. My prayer then — and still now — was that he and the church might safely endure the trial and see a new season of revival.
Since then, Pastor Jin has been banned from leaving China, deprived of the freedom to travel abroad. Our family has been separated for seven long years, living apart with little hope of reunion. I have been raising our children alone overseas, while he faces harsh persecution in Beijing. Friends sometimes joke, “You’re worse off than the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl — at least they reunite once a year.” But to me, it is no joke. Our two sons have grown up without their father’s presence during their most formative years — the time when they most needed his example and guidance. Every time I hear them speak of missing their father, my heart breaks and tears fall silently.
Yet God’s Word has been my continual comfort:
“Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy.”
— Psalm 126:5As Pastor Jin Mingri’s wife, I am also deeply concerned for his physical health. Therefore, I once again earnestly ask all brothers and sisters in Christ to pray urgently for him — that the Lord would keep His faithful servant safe, grant him peace and wisdom in his heart, and bring about his complete freedom: not only his release without charge, but also the lifting of his travel ban, so that our family may be reunited once again.
With heartfelt gratitude and hope,
Liu Chunli

Detention of Zion House Church Leaders in China
Press Statement
Marco Rubio, Secretary of State
October 12, 2025
The United States condemns the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)’s recent detention of dozens of leaders of the unregistered house Zion Church in China, including prominent pastor Mingri “Ezra” Jin.
This crackdown further demonstrates how the CCP exercises hostility towards Christians who reject Party interference in their faith and choose to worship at unregistered house churches.
We call on the CCP to immediately release the detained church leaders and to allow all people of faith, including members of house churches, to engage in religious activities without fear of retribution.
