Valerie Kloosterman, a physician assistant and third-generation Michigan healthcare worker, served 17 years with exemplary reviews. After the University of Michigan Health took over her clinic in 2021, she was fired for requesting a religious accommodation during mandatory diversity training, refusing to affirm gender ideology or make referrals conflicting with her Christian beliefs.
She filed a discrimination complaint, and in 2022 First Liberty sued on her behalf. In 2023, a federal judge allowed her suit to proceed. In August 2025, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in her favor, rejecting Michigan Health’s attempt to force an arbitration. The verdict strengthens protection for employees facing religious discrimination.
The case now returns to district court for a decision on the merits.
