According to a report by Open Doors UK and Ireland, persecution is rising in the coastal region of Andhra Pradesh, India, where a Christian fishing community has faced months of isolation.
Local leaders began collecting funds to build a Hindu temple and demanded contributions from every family.
The Christian fishermen — around one hundred households — respectfully declined, saying their faith didn’t allow them to give.
That’s when the retaliation began.
Their boats were banned from the harbor.
Shops refused to sell them food.
Neighbors stopped talking to them — even a simple greeting could lead to a fine.
One believer told Open Doors, “We are not able to talk to people next to our door. If we do so, we will be fined.”
A widow raising five children said, “My husband passed away. My income has reduced because of these restrictions. No one comes to my shop anymore.”
For over eight months, these families have lived as outcasts in their own village — struggling to fish, feed their children, and survive.
Police tried to intervene, but village leaders refused to attend peace talks.
A case has been filed in the High Court, yet justice remains uncertain.
Open Doors says this is part of a larger pattern of low-profile persecution — less visible than violence, but just as painful.
India now ranks number eleven on the World Watch List of nations where Christians face the highest pressure for their faith.
And yet, these families refuse to back down.
One fisherman said, “Even if they stop us from fishing, we will not stop following Jesus.”
