Duke Student Government Senate declines to recognize Young Life as an official Duke student group [#DukeStudentGovernmentSenate #YoungLife #ChristianOrganization]

Duke Student Government Senate unanimously declined to recognize Young Life as an official Duke student group at its Wednesday, September 11, 2019 meeting.

Young Life is a national Christian organization that has branches serving middle and high school students in Durham and Chapel Hill in North Carolina.

The group had requested official recognition to recruit and support a greater number of students, as it already has a following on campus.

But Young Life was rebuffed over concerns about the national organization’s policies concerning LGBTQ+ leaders.

At last week’s DSG meeting, senators noted that the national organization’s rule barring LGBTQ+ individuals from leadership positions violates the Student Organization Finance Committee’s guideline that every Duke student group include a nondiscrimination statement in its constitution.

The Senate then tabled the vote to give Young Life members the chance to speak to senators at this week’s meeting.

According to Young Life’s sexual misconduct policy, “we do not in any way wish to exclude persons who engage in sexual misconduct or who practice a homosexual lifestyle from being recipients of ministry of God’s grace and mercy as expressed in Jesus Christ. We do, however, believe that such persons are not to serve as staff or volunteers in the mission and work of Young Life.”

Rev. Gary Simpson, Pastor of Christian Life Church in Trafford, Haymaker Village neighborhood in Pennsylvania to retire after 34 years at the church [#ChristianLifeChurch #TraffordPennsylvania #HaymakerVillage]

When the Rev. Gary Simpson came to Christian Life Church in Trafford, the Haymaker Village neighborhood was a grassy field, and a stop sign was perfectly capable of handling traffic at the corner of Forbes Road and Route 130.

That was in 1985.

“Children who were born in the early years of my pastorate are now grown and married with children of their own.”
– Simpson, who will retire Oct. 6, 2019 after 34 years at the church

Simpson’s 34 years are the longest tenure of the six pastors in the church’s 81-year history.

Bijaya Kumar Sanaseth, second Christian released on bail out of the 7 wrongly convicted of killing a Hindu extremist leader, Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati in India [#BijayaKumarSanaseth #SwamiLaxmananandaSaraswati #ChristianNews]

When Bijaya Kumar Sanaseth went to jail for a murder in India that he did not commit more than 10 and a half years ago, his mother was still alive and his oldest child was 9 years old.

“I have not seen my children grow.”
– Bijaya Kumar Sanaseth, the second Christian to be released on bail of the 7 wrongly convicted of killing a Hindu extremist leader said between sobs.

“My six children were very young with my youngest child, a girl, being 1-year-old, and my oldest, a boy, was 9 years old. Today the youngest is 12 and my oldest is 20. Nobody can give me back the years that I have lost.”
– Bijaya Kumar Sanaseth

Bijaya Kumar Sanaseth and the 6 other Christians were convicted in September 2013 of the murder of Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati, whose death on Aug. 23, 2008 touched off anti-Christian attacks that killed 120 people, destroyed nearly 6,000 homes and displaced 55,000 Christians.

Now 47, Bijaya Kumar Sanaseth was released on bail on July 27, 2019, 2 months and 6 days after fellow convict Gornath Chalanseth was bailed out on May 21, 2019.

“I faced a lot of hardships in jail – I thank God for this freedom. I trusted God would bring me out one day.”
– Bijaya Kumar Sanaseth

Because the Supreme Court issued the release on bail, he does not have to return unless the high court itself so orders.

Joshua Harris, former pastor and author of “I Kissed Dating Goodbye”: “by all the measurements that I have for defining a Christian, I am not a Christian.” [#JoshuaHarris #IKissedDatingGoodbye #FormerPastor]

J.R.R. Tolkien observed, Not all those who wander are lost.
The corollary is that not all who lead know where they are going.

Both these statements are true of Joshua Harris, the former pastor and author of “I Kissed Dating Goodbye” (1997), who acknowledged on Instagram last week that “by all the measurements that I have for defining a Christian, I am not a Christian.”

Mr. Harris’s announcement carried strange poignancy for millennials who grew up in evangelical churches. In the 1990s, when they were teens, the mood was countercultural. Parents pondered their disillusion with the sexual revolution and observed the high rate of teen pregnancy and the AIDS epidemic. Dads attended Promise Keepers, moms considered home schooling, and both urged their kids to save sex for marriage.

The Purity Movement, also known as the True Love Waits Movement, caught on. In July 1994, some 210,000 teenagers gathered on the National Mall in Washington to sign virginity pledges. Others made the same vow at church youth groups and home-school conferences.

South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg blasted “so-called conservative Christian senators” for opposing the minimum wage citing Proverbs 14:31 [#PeteButtigieg #SouthBend #MinimumWage]

South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg blasted “so-called conservative Christian senators” for opposing the minimum wage as Democrats tried to take the moral high ground during the first night of the second round of Democratic presidential primary debates.

“The minimum wage is just too low. And so-called conservative Christian senators right now in the Senate are blocking a bill to raise the minimum wage when scripture says that, ‘Whoever oppresses the poor taunts their Maker.'”
– Buttigieg declared in Detroit, Mich. at the Fox Theatre, citing Proverbs 14:31.

He who oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker,
But he who honors Him has mercy on the needy.
