Kennedy Canales, a student at Plattsburgh Senior High School in New York, did everything right.
She filled out the forms, found a faculty advisor, named student officers, and submitted her presentation.
Her proposed group? The “Jesus Club.”
But instead of approval, school officials told her the name wasn’t “inclusive.”
They said she needed to rename it to something “neutral” — like “Faith Club.”
And then… they delayed.
Her application sat unapproved for nine months.
She was told she couldn’t meet during regular club periods.
And while she waited — a secular club, filed the same day, was approved within days.
That’s when the American Center for Law & Justice (ACLJ) stepped in.
They filed a legal demand letter accusing the district of violating both the Equal Access Act and the First Amendment.
The law is clear: once a school allows any non-curriculum club, it must allow all — including religious ones — on equal terms.
The ACLJ isn’t new to this fight.
They’ve done this before — and they’ve won before.

“But here’s where it gets interesting — this isn’t just another local controversy.
The twist we mentioned at the beginning… it’s this:
The ACLJ has already fought — and won — this exact battle at the highest court in America.”

In 1990, ACLJ Chief Counsel Jay Sekulow argued — and won — a landmark case before the U.S. Supreme Court:
Westside Community Schools v. Mergens.
The Court ruled 8–1 that schools cannot deny student Bible clubs when other clubs are allowed.
That victory made the Equal Access Act the law of the land.
Then in 2001, the ACLJ supported another case —
Good News Club v. Milford Central School,
where the Supreme Court ruled 6–3 that schools cannot exclude faith-based clubs from meeting on campus after hours.
Both rulings still stand today — and they protect students like Kennedy right now.
So if this district doesn’t back down… they could be facing another courtroom loss.
