According to MidAmerica Nazarene University, Dr. James H. Diehl Sr., beloved General Superintendent Emeritus of the Church of the Nazarene, passed away in early November 2025.
He leaves behind a remarkable legacy of faith, leadership, and love that continues to shape generations.
Dr. Diehl devoted his life to ministry — pastoring congregations in Iowa and Georgia, and later serving as senior pastor at First Church of the Nazarene in Denver, Colorado.
His ministry was remembered for warmth, humor, and a passionate call to holy living — always pointing people back to the transforming grace of Jesus Christ.
A graduate of Olivet Nazarene University, he also received an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Northwest Nazarene University in 1990.
His influence stretched far beyond one pulpit — traveling the world to encourage pastors, missionaries, and believers that the Gospel still changes lives.
At MidAmerica Nazarene University, where he served as a faithful supporter and mentor, leaders remembered him as “a servant whose legacy of love and holiness continues to inspire.”

In 1993, at the 23rd General Assembly of the Church of the Nazarene in Indianapolis, delegates from around the world sought God’s guidance as they prepared to elect new leaders for a new generation.
And in that sacred moment, Dr. James H. Diehl Sr. was elected General Superintendent — the highest leadership office in the global Church of the Nazarene.
That day marked the defining moment of his ministry — a call that carried him to nations across the world, guiding the church, strengthening its mission, and reminding believers to live holy lives devoted to Christ.
He served faithfully in that role until his retirement in 2009, when he was honored with the lifelong title of General Superintendent Emeritus — a recognition reserved for those who have led with humility, vision, and unwavering faith.
