The Free Church of Scotland is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Prof. John R. McIntosh, who went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 16, 2025.
Prof. McIntosh faithfully served as minister of the Lochgilphead and Aultbea Free Church congregations before becoming Professor of Church History at the Free Church College (now Edinburgh Theological Seminary) in 2005. He retired in 2017 after years of teaching and developing future leaders of the Church.

Rev. Iver Martin, Principal of ETS, paid tribute, saying Prof. McIntosh was โhighly respected as an academic, particularly in the area of 18th and 19th century Scottish ecclesiastical history.โ
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Anne, and their two sons, James and Donald.

The Free Church of Scotland is profoundly saddened to hear that Prof John R McIntosh passed away on Saturday 16th August.
Prof McIntosh served as minister of both the Lochgilphead and Aultbea Free Church congregations before being appointed as Professor of Church History at the Free Church College (now Edinburgh Theological Seminary) in 2005. He retired from there in 2017.
Rev Iver Martin, Principal of Edinburgh Theological Seminary said: โAs well as knowing Prof McIntosh as a friend, I had the honour of working closely with him for several years. He was highly respected as an academic, particularly in the area of 18th and 19th century Scottish ecclesiastical history.โ
We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife, Anne and their two sons, James and Donald.
