Eleftherios Papakaloudoukas, the mayor of Symi, has sworn not to call off the search for missing TV doctor Michael Mosley until he is located.
However, with temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius on the day Mosley went missing, and scorching temperatures continuing to batter the island, the mayor has cautioned that he does not know how “anyone could survive” the heat.
The heat became so intense on Saturday morning that authorities had to limit the use of search dogs.
A search dog was only able to work for an hour after the search resumed at 6 AM Eastern European Summer Time, as police looked for leads.
The search operation has involved police, firefighters with drones, volunteer groups, divers, even Mosley’s own children, who flew to Greece this week.
The hunt has shifted its focus to a new trail, with Papakaloudoukas characterizing Mosley’s journey as “difficult to pass” and “only rocks”.
He noted that there are “loads” of snakes on the walk.
The Symi mayor expressed his hope that Mosley would be found “safe and alive” before adding, through a translation, “All the community is so sad about this, (it has) never happened before.”
The mayor’s strong warning about the heat, as well as concerns about whether anyone could live in such temperatures, will definitely heighten the concerns of many who are hoping for a positive outcome.
Several celebrities, like Jeremy Clarkson and Jeremy Vine, have mirrored the mayor’s sentiments and joined the campaign in recent days.
Since the appeal was published on Wednesday evening, theories have circulated, with some fearing Mosley was “swept into the sea”.
