Question #1. What is Prime Minister Netanyahu’s response to ICC prosecutor Karim Khan?
On November 21, 2024, the ICC issued historic arrest warrants against Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Gallant, accusing them of war crimes in Gaza, including the use of starvation as a weapon of warfare and other crimes against humanity. These were the first warrants ever issued against leaders of a Western-style democracy.
In response, on September 4, 2025, Prime Minister Netanyahu released a video on the verified X account of the Prime Minister’s office titled: “The REAL reason that the International Criminal Court accused Israel.” In the video, he strongly rejects the ICC’s accusations, calling them as baseless and politically motivated. Prime Minister Netanyahu claims that Israel has one of the world’s most independent judiciaries and does not need outside intervention and external oversight. He further claimed that the ICC prosecutor Karim Khan initially praised Israel’s judiciary and even planned a visit, but on the very same day canceled the trip and announced the arrest warrants. Prime Minister Netanyahu claims that this sudden reversal is clear evidence that the ICC’s move was driven by personal and political motives rather than genuine justice.
Question #2. What are the allegations of political motives and scandals surrounding the ICC?
In the same video, Prime Minister Netanyahu links the ICC’s decision to controversies surrounding its chief prosecutor, Karim Khan. According to reports, Khan was accused of personal misconduct around the same time he filed complaints against Israel. Prime Minister Netanyahu and other Israeli officials claim that the prosecutor used Israel as a “scapegoat” to divert attention away from personal sexual assault allegations by issuing unprecedented charges and protect his career. Prime Minister Netanyahu insists that this case is not about law but about Khan’s personal survival and the ICC’s broader credibility crisis. These allegations have fueled wider criticism that the ICC applies international law selectively, targeting Israel while ignoring more severe violations elsewhere and that the ICC’s actions are less about international law and justice and more about political pressure, double standards, and selective justice.
Question #3. How has the world reacted—through US sanctions, UN debates, genocide claims, and international law battles?
The ICC warrants set off a global firestorm and the reaction has been deeply polarized. In April 2025, the ICC’s Appeals Chamber asked a pretrial panel to reconsider Israel’s objection to the court’s jurisdiction—delaying but not overturning the arrest warrants. Then, on September 4, 2025, the US imposed sanctions on Palestinian human rights groups that supported the ICC investigation, signaling Washington’s opposition to the case and highlighting deep international divisions.
Meanwhile, debates at the UN have intensified over whether Israel’s actions in Gaza constitute war crimes or genocide. Adding to the criticism, the International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) passed a resolution on September 1, 2025, declaring that Israel’s conduct meets the legal definition of genocide.
Together, these developments show how the ICC case has become a flashpoint in global politics—dividing allies, fueling controversy, and intensifying scrutiny of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.
Meanwhile, Israel continues to challenge the ICC’s jurisdiction in international courts, ensuring that the legal and diplomatic battle is far from over.
Question #4. What does this mean for Israel’s future in global diplomacy?
The ICC case threatens to isolate Israel diplomatically and strain its key alliances. If upheld, the arrest warrants could restrict Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Gallant’s international travel, fuel boycotts, and increase pressure from the international community on Israel. At the same time, recent US sanctions against Palestinian groups show Israel continues to enjoy strong backing from its most important ally. Ultimately, for Prime Minister Netanyahu, the case is not just about legal accountability—it is a fight for Israel’s legitimacy, security, and survival on the world stage.
