Meirav Leshem Gonen, mother of 23-y/o hostage Romi Gonen at the UN HRC:
“I stand before you today not just as a mother, but also as a voice for women who have endured unimaginable suffering, whose pain is not acknowledged.”
Hear her voice, feel her pain.
Meirav Leshem Gonen, her voice shaking with emotion, explains to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) the misery of hearing over the phone as Hamas terrorists kidnapped her daughter on October 7.
Her appeal comes as the top UN human rights panel in Geneva debates a scathing report accusing Israel and Hamas of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza offensive, which was undertaken in response to the Palestinian terror group’s mass onslaught.
The independent Commission of Inquiry’s report highlighted the predicament of women caught up in the attack, claiming that “women and women’s bodies were used as victory trophies by male perpetrators.”
Israel has sharply criticized the report, with Leshem Gonen herself claiming that it “trivializes the severity of sexual violence experienced by women in captivity.”
“I stand before you today not just as a mother, but also as a voice for women who have endured unimaginable suffering, whose pain is not acknowledged. When women’s bodies are used as political tools, when their dignity is set aside because they are not on the ‘right side,’ it is a badge of shame for us all.”

Leshem Gonen describes the agony she and the other hostages’ families experience.
On October 7, her daughter’s car was assaulted by Hamas gunmen as she fled the Supernova music festival.
During the attack, she called her mother, who attempted to console her over the noise of explosions.
