On the Consent Calendar this morning, General Conference, with approval at 93%, voted to remove the denomination’s ban on the ordination of clergy who are “self-avowed practicing homosexuals”, a restriction going back to 1984.
Delegate Jill Gaynor and Alternate Delegate Rev. Leigh Anne Taylor share their perspectives.

In an emotional morning, the General Conference lifted the restriction on “self-avowed practicing” LGBT clergy.

Delegates and observers joyfully sung hymns after the vote during the break.

General Conferences continue to quietly repeal some of The United Methodist Church’s long-standing bans on LGBTQ members.

There may be other changes in the future.

The United Methodist Church’s 1984 ban on the ordination of clergy who are “self-avowed practicing homosexuals” was repealed without debate at General Conference.

During the morning session on May 1, General Conference adopted the move, along with 22 items of legislation on the consent calendar, allowing delegates to pass numerous petitions in bulk if they have overwhelming support in legislative committee and have no budgetary or constitutional implications.

The vote on the consent calendar was 692-51, with 93% support.

Delegates and observers applauded following the vote.

Also on the consent calendar, delegates voted that superintendents should not penalize clergy or churches for holding—or not holding—same-sex weddings.

Another accepted reform encourages the Council of Bishops to consider gender, race, ethnicity, age, individuals with disabilities, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status when appointing delegates to ecumenical organizations.

The measure voted on this morning’s consent calendar continues the General Conference’s stealthy reversal of some of The United Methodist Church’s longstanding limitations on LGBTQ members.

More potential changes are expected, possibly later today.
