Earlier this week, Michelle and I called our friend Kamala Harris. We told her we think she’ll make a fantastic President of the United States, and that she has our full support. At this critical moment for our country, we’re going to do everything we can to make sure she wins in November. We hope you’ll join us.
Barack Obama has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic presidential nomination, putting an end to days of speculation about whether he will support her.
Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama said in a joint statement that they believe Ms Harris has the “vision, the character, and the strength that this critical moment demands”.
Mr Obama was reportedly one of more than 100 senior Democrats to whom Harris spoke after President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the contest last Sunday.
In a statement at the time, Obama praised Biden’s departure but did not endorse Ms Harris.
The US vice president has already received the endorsement of a majority of Democratic delegates, putting her on track to become the official nominee at the party convention in August.
The Obamas stated in a statement on Friday that they couldn’t be “more thrilled to endorse” Harris.
They promised to do “everything we can” to elect her.
They noted her record as California’s attorney general, a US senator, and later vice president.
The statement was followed by a video of Harris receiving a phone call from the Obamas, during which they pledged their support.
