CHRISTIAN BREAKING NEWS: Democrats Aim to Nominate President in First Week of August, as Some Push Joe Biden to Leave the Race
Democrats plan to have a virtual vote to select President Joe Biden as their party’s nominee in the first week of August, as Biden has rejected calls from some in his party to withdraw from the race following his poor debate performance against Donald Trump.
According to a letter addressed to members and obtained by The Associated Press on Wednesday, the Democratic National Convention’s rules committee will meet on Friday to discuss its plans, which will be finalized next week.
The letter from co-chairs Bishop Leah Daughtry and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz indicates that the virtual vote will not take place until August 1, but the party remains committed to holding a vote before August 7, which was Ohio’s filing deadline.
The party announced in May that it will hold an early roll call to ensure Biden’s eligibility for the ballot in Ohio, which had an original deadline of August 7, but the state’s regulations have since changed.
The Biden campaign insists that the party follow Ohio’s initial regulations to prevent Republican lawmakers from filing legal challenges to keep the president off the ballot.
The letter from Daughtry and Walz comes a day after a group of House Democrats concerned about quickly choosing Biden as the party’s reelection candidate circulated another letter expressing “serious concerns” about preparations for a virtual roll call.
Their letter to the Democratic National Committee, which has not yet been sent, states that it would be a “terrible idea” to suppress debate about the party’s nominee with an early roll call vote.
The Democratic National Convention is scheduled for August 19-22 in Chicago.
