The price of health care in the United States has pushed a South Georgia couple to go outside the country for an alternative.
Elaine Horvath traveled to Mexico to receive treatment for stage 4 breast cancer, but while there, her husband, Chris, suffered a heart attack.
“From the beginning I’ve said I don’t know what this journey looks like for me… I’m praying that I will be completely healed.”
– Elaine Horvath
Elaine stated that the treatment she required would cost her $900,000 in the United States, so she and her loved ones began researching alternative options.
Thanks to family and friends in North Carolina, Elaine discovered Hope 4 Cancer in Cancun, Mexico.
There, she might receive treatment beginning at $45,000.
According to the Center for Disease Control, 150,000 to 300,000 Americans travel to other countries each year for treatment due to high prices.
According to the Medical Tourism Association, treatment in nations such as Mexico can cost more than 50% less, but what happens when even those costs become too expensive?
Chris, Elaine’s husband, needed to consult a doctor for heart problems 2 days after landing in Cancun.
Doctors discovered an 85% blockage around his heart, indicating the need for surgery.
Elaine began contacting family and friends to assist fund the costs of getting Chris back to health.
The couple is still worried about what will happen when they return home.
Their oldest daughter and a close friend started a GoFundMe to help the couple raise some of the funds.
Overall, the couple hopes that their story reminds people that God does provide.
“Our prayer is that our story will point at least one person to Jesus.”
– Chris, Elaine’s Husband
Elaine is still undergoing treatment and hopes to return to Mexico, while Chris is recovering and doing much better.
