Hi everyone,

The Museum of the Holocaust in Guatemala City (Museo del Holocausto)—the only Holocaust museum in Central America—was vandalized by anti-Israel activists on August 10, 2025.

Graffiti reading “Gaza Viva” and posters about Gaza were plastered on its walls after a pro-Palestinian protest.

Museum Director Marco Gonzalez and Father Patrick Desbois strongly condemned the attack, reaffirming their mission to fighting antisemitism and preserving Holocaust memory.

Guatemala, known for its historic support of Israel, is now facing rising tensions amidst global unrest.
This incident serves as a reminder of why Holocaust education is essential.

Perpetrators spray-painted the words “Gaza Viva” on its walls and hung about 18 posters referencing Gaza.

This act of vandalism came immediately after a small pro-Palestinian demonstration involving around two dozen protesters. Surveillance footage captured three individuals carrying out the vandalism just before midnight, but as of now no arrests have been made.

Marco Gonzalez, the museum’s director, condemned the incident, emphasizing the troubling nature of using the conflict in Gaza as an excuse to target Jewish heritage monuments. Father Patrick Desbois, founder of the museum’s operating organization Yahad-In Unum, reaffirmed their commitment to Holocaust education: “We will not stop teaching the Holocaust to new generations, so that tomorrow Guatemala will be free of hatred and antisemitism.”

Founded in 2016, the Museo del Holocausto was established by the Paris-based Christian organization Yahad-In Unum. It aims to educate the public on the horrors of the Holocaust—and by extension, to inspire reflection on Guatemala’s own history of violence.

Holocaust education is integrated into Guatemala’s national curriculum, reflecting the country’s longstanding commitment to remembering the Holocaust and opposing antisemitism. Guatemala was also the first Latin American country to recognize Israel in 1947 and the second (after the United States) to move its embassy to Jerusalem in 2018.

The museum attracts roughly 20,000 visitors per year—a considerable number given the relatively small size of Guatemala’s Jewish community.
