This afternoon, hundreds of Irish protestors participated in an anti-immigration march through Dublin’s downtown.
Outside the GPO, there was a tiny counter-protest where gardaí stood in a line between the 2 groups, exchanging slogans.
The city center was heavily patrolled by garda, including members of the public order unit.
Around 2:30 PM Irish time, the crowd assembled in the Garden of Remembrance on Parnell Square, and then they marched along O’Connell Street in the direction of the Custom House.
While the gathering chanted, a large number of protestors brandished Irish flags and several carried signs with inscriptions like “Irish Lives Matter.”
The words “Newtown community says no” were displayed on a banner held by those leading the march, and similar banners representing Coolock, Finglas, Kildare, and other communities were also visible.
At a recent protest against plans to shelter asylum seekers in Newtownmountkennedy, County Wicklow, protesters caused damage to 3 garda cars and resulted in several arrests.
Applause was called for today at the Custom House by speakers who commended the town’s protestors despite “Government brutality.”
For the duration of the protest, all traffic through the city’s major avenue was stopped, and Luas trams and buses were either rerouted or suspended.
During the Dublin riots, protesters set a garda car on fire and damaged shopfronts.
Members of the public order unit gathered at the turn onto Parnell Street.
Today, counter protesters outside the GPO carried several flags, including Palestinian flags, and a banner that read “refugees welcome.”
After both groups exchanged slogans, a line of guards formed and the march moved towards the Custom House.
Many of the speakers were political contenders from Europe or locally, hoping to energize the public before the nation heads to the polls on Jun. 7.
Protesters were urged to “take back control” and make sure they cast ballots in the upcoming elections.
Some of their supporters canvassed in the crowd and handed out leaflets, while other distributed copies of the Proclamation of Independence.
Speeches focused on the migration policy and pushed back on the EU Migration Pact, with many telling the crowd that “Ireland is Full” and “Enough is Enough”.
Others informed protestors that they were marching to “defend” their children, without stating from what, while claiming that Irish heritage was at danger.
After hearing that the Dáil parties do not “care” about them, protestors booed Simon Harris and Justice Minister Helen McEntee and later chanted that Sinn Féin were “traitors.”
After the rally ended at 5:00 PM, the attendees dispersed.
