CHRISTIAN BREAKING NEWS: Happy Mother’s Day! [#HappyMothersDay #HappyMothersDay2025 #MothersDay #MothersDay2025]

The modern holiday originated in 1907, when Anna Jarvis organized the inaugural Mother’s Day worship service at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia.

Her campaign to make Mother’s Day a recognized holiday in the United States began in 1905, the year her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, passed away.

Ann Jarvis was a peace activist who cared for injured soldiers from both sides of the American Civil War and founded Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health concerns.

She and another peace activist and suffragist, Julia Ward Howe, had been advocating for the establishment of a “Mother’s Day For Peace” in which mothers would request that their husbands and sons not be killed in wars.

Ward Howe issued her Mother’s Day Proclamation in 1870, 40 years before it became an official holiday, urging mothers of all countries to work together to achieve the “amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace.”

Anna Jarvis wanted to recognize this and set aside a day to honor all mothers since she believed that a mother is “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world”.

In 1908, the United States Congress rejected a proposal to make Mother’s Day an official holiday, joking that they would also have to declare a “Mother-in-law’s Day”.

However, owing to Anna Jarvis’ efforts, all states in the United States honored Mother’s Day by 1911, with some formally recognizing it as a local holiday (West Virginia, Jarvis’ home state, being the first in 1910).

In 1914, Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation recognizing Mother’s Day, the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor and celebrate mothers.

Anna Jarvis founded the Mother’s Day International Association in 1912, after trademarking the phrase “Second Sunday in May, Mother’s Day, Anna Jarvis, Founder”.

She pointed out that “Mother’s” ought to “be a singular possessive, for each family to honor its own mother, not a plural possessive commemorating all mothers in the world.”

This is also the spelling used by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson in his 1914 presidential proclamation, the United States Congress in pertinent bills,, and by various U.S. presidents in their Mother’s Day proclamations.
