CHRISTIAN BREAKING NEWS: [UPDATE] ICJ Orders Israel to Halt Rafah Operation, Requests Additional Measures Approved by a Vote of 13-2
The ruling came in response to South Africa’s additional request for provisional measures ordering Israel to halt all military operations in the Gaza Strip, which was made 10 days ago.
On Friday, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague ordered Israel to halt its operation in Rafah, dealing a blow to Jerusalem’s diplomatic and judicial systems.
The court also ordered Israel to allow all humanitarian aid to enter Gaza.
All measures were approved by a vote of 13-2.
Julia Sebutinde, Uganda’s delegate to the ICJ, and Aharon Barak, former Israeli High Court President and Israel’s ICJ Panel appointee, both voted against each each measure.
The court also emphasized that Israel must keep the Rafah gate from Egypt to Gaza open on a “scale of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian assistance.”
Israel must submit a report within a month demonstrating its compliance with these orders.
Israel could
1 accept the ruling
a)as is
b) with conditions such as release of hostages
c) demilitarization, and so on or
2) reject the ruling
Judge Nawaf Salam, president of the ICJ, stated that the humanitarian situation in Gaza, particularly in Rafah, has deteriorated seriously over the last 2 months, despite repeated warnings from various UN organizations, including those involving hospitals in the area.
The Judge said that he was ‘’not convinced by the evacuation efforts of Israel’’.
He claimed that Israel had failed to adequately address these risks.
The right of Palestinians in Gaza to be protected is in ”real and imminent risk”.
Israel has repeatedly dismissed the case’s accusations of genocide as baseless, claiming in court that its operations in Gaza are self-defense and aimed at Hamas militants who attacked Israel on Oct. 7.
On the eve of Friday’s decision, an Israeli government spokeswoman stated, “No power on Earth will stop Israel from protecting its citizens and going after Hamas in Gaza.”
The ICJ issued its orders in response to a request made by South Africa 10 days ago for provisional measures ordering Israel to halt all its military operations in the Gaza Strip.
Pretoria stated that conditions had changed since the court’s last ruling on the subject in March, due to the Israeli operation in east Rafah, which began in May. 7.
Still, Pretoria requested in its court plea that Israel cease all fighting and remove all of its forces from the Gaza Strip, not just Rafah.
Following the South African motion, the court convened 2 sessions on the issue.
South Africa delivered its case on Thursday, while Israel gave its counter-arguments on Friday.
The court denied Israel’s plea for a reasonable amount of time to prepare its defense, which is why just a limited legal team attended the hearings in The Hague last week.
