Sen. Peter Welch (Vt.) has become the first Democratic senator to call on President Biden to step aside following his June debate.

“We cannot unsee President Biden’s disastrous debate performance,” the freshman senator wrote in a Washington Post op-ed published Wednesday evening.

“We can’t ignore or discount the legitimate concerns expressed since that night.”

“For the good of the country, I’m calling on President Biden to withdraw from the race.”

The senator highlighted polling “shifts” in Minnesota, New Hampshire, Nevada, Arizona, and Georgia to argue that the political risk was too big for Biden to remain in the race due to the possibility of Donald Trump winning.

Democratic lawmakers continue to question Biden’s candidacy and express concern about their party’s chances in the fall.

12 members of the House have urged Biden to step aside.

Several senators privately raised fears in a closed-door meeting Tuesday that Biden had no chance of winning in 2024 and that his unpopularity threatens Democrats losing both the House and the Senate.

In his op-ed, Welch commended Biden for his years of service, saying that he had “united” the party and helped build a bench of elected leaders capable of defeating Trump.

He described Vice President Harris as a “capable” leader and lauded several unnamed Democratic governors and senators.

“I understand why President Biden wants to run. He saved us from Donald Trump once and wants to do it again. But he needs to reassess whether he is the best candidate to do so. In my view, he is not.”
