For parents, the start of a new school year usually means a lot of work and shopping.
All of that came to an end for one Daviess County, KY family as they prepared to send their oldest kid to middle school.
Braxton Rhodes, 11, will miss his first day of sixth grade at St. Mary of the Woods because he will be in the hospital.
Rodney and Megan say their son suffered a broken femur, a dislocated hip, and significant injuries to his back and leg when the ATV he was driving fell over last Thursday.
Fortunately, a family friend in the area heard Braxton and his friends’ calls for help and called 911.
Braxton had to be airlifted to Norton Children’s Hospital in Louisville, KY due to his injuries.
Megan Rhodes initially reported that her son appeared to be well.
She claims Braxton was awake and speaking on the day of the accident in the hospital.
Megan claims that the 11-year-old rapidly developed a severe infection in his leg.
The Rhodes say they have received dozens of calls, notes, and texts from well-wishers who learned of their son’s accident.
“It’s been overwhelming the support we’ve received from family friends and community. It really means a lot to us. It does help us get through this very difficult situation. A lot of people reached out and want to know what they can do to help. the biggest thing they can do to help out right now is say some prayers.”

However, many of those friends have gone beyond simply praying.
One friend contacted the family to arrange a fundraiser for the 11-year-old in Whitesville.
The event will take place all day on August 10.
