“Hamas is holding women, children, the sick and the elderly hostage in Gaza. We will keep on doing everything we need for their freedom…This is what any other decent country in the world would do.”
– IDF Spokesperson RAdm. Daniel Hagari regarding the death of 4 hostages under Hamas captivity
Following the military’s disclosure of the deaths of 4 hostages in Gaza, a spontaneous anti-government protest erupted outside IDF headquarters in Tel Aviv on Monday night, demanding an immediate deal for the release of remaining Israeli hostages held by Hamas.
Photos and videos from the protest show hundreds of protesters blocking traffic on the Ayalon Highway and blazing a bonfire in the middle of the road after midnight.
Protesters took to the streets across the country, with dozens gathering in towns including as Jerusalem, Haifa, Rehovot, Pardes Hanna- Karkur, and Ra’anana to demand a hostage deal, according to the anti-government Pro-Democracy Movement.
Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, IDF spokesman, said in a press briefing on Monday evening that the military could not immediately confirm the circumstances of the deaths of Chaim Peri, 79, Amiram Cooper, 84, Yoram Metzger, 80, and Nadav Popplewell, 51, but will conduct a thorough investigation.
The announcement followed the collecting of new intelligence findings.
Activists on social media reported that, while the protest dispersed quietly in the early hours of Tuesday, police fined approximately a dozen protestors.
Alimut Israel, a police violence watchdog group, reported on X that 2 activists protesting the fines were “violently” arrested as a result.
Following the confirmation of the hostages’ deaths, the Hostage Families Forum issued a statement expressing “heartbreak” over the news, which it said should “shake up every citizen in the State of Israel, and elicit deep soul-searching in every leader.”
“Haim, Yoram, Amiram, and Nadav were kidnapped alive; some of them were with other hostages who returned in the previous deal, and they should have come home alive to their country and their families,” the statement said, urging the government to immediately accept a deal to return the remaining hostages home.
They were kidnapped during Hamas’ Oct. 7 massacre, in which about 3,000 terrorists crossed the border into Israel by land, air, and sea, killing 1,200 people and capturing 251 captives while committing acts of violence and sexual assault.
Einav Zangauker, mother of hostage Matan Zangauker, addressed the gathering on Monday night:
“Today, we received unequivocal proof — these are the results of military pressure: We get them back dead!”
The protests occurred just days after US President Joe Biden publicly announced an Israeli proposal for a phased hostage release and cease-fire deal.
His announcement sent shockwaves across the cabinet, with far-right parties threatening to derail the coalition if Netanyahu moved to advance it.
Netanyahu has now reportedly stated that there are differences between the approved deal and the details Biden outlined, a charge the White House has denied.
It is believed that 120 hostages captured by Hamas on Oct. 7 are still in Gaza, but not all of them are alive, after 105 people were released from Hamas captivity during a weeklong truce in late November, and 4 hostages were released earlier.
Troops rescued 3 hostages alive, and the bodies of 19 hostages were recovered, including 3 who were mistakenly killed by the military.
The IDF has confirmed the deaths of 41 of those still held by Hamas, citing new intelligence and data obtained by troops operating in Gaza.
1 more person has been missing since Oct. 7, and their fate remains unknown.
Hamas also detained 2 Israeli civilians who entered the Strip in 2014 and 2015, as well as the bodies of 2 IDF soldiers who were killed in 2014.
