A Christian pastor from California has been released from Chinese custody after nearly 20 years in prison and has returned to the United States, the State Department announced Monday.
According to the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom and advocacy groups, David Lin, 68, was detained upon entering China in 2006 and later convicted of contract fraud and sentenced to life in prison.
The Biden administration has been working on David Lin’s case and the cases of other wrongfully detained Americans in China for years, bringing them up at every meeting with senior Chinese officials, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Laos this summer.
Despite rising tensions, such discussions try to maintain open lines of communication between Washington and Beijing.
Lin routinely traveled to China in the 1990s to spread the gospel, according to China Aid, which claims Lin applied for a license from the Chinese government to conduct Christian ministry.
He was unlikely to be granted permission, and he was jailed in 2006 while supporting a church not sanctioned by Chinese government, according to the group.
