In his statement, President Trump wrote:
“Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am hereby making Nigeria a ‘Country of Particular Concern.’”
He also directed Congressman Riley Moore, Chairman Tom Cole, and the House Appropriations Committee to “immediately look into this matter and report back.”
That “Country of Particular Concern” label isn’t symbolic. Under the International Religious Freedom Act, it opens the door for U.S. sanctions, aid restrictions, and human rights action.
Trump cited staggering numbers — over 3,100 Christians killed this year in Nigeria, compared to 4,476 worldwide.
Advocacy groups say Nigeria’s Middle Belt has become one of the most dangerous places to be a Christian, with Boko Haram, ISWAP, and radicalized Fulani militias carrying out violent attacks on believers.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian government denies a religious motive, calling it a complex mix of ethnic and land-based conflicts.
But global watchdogs, pastors, and eyewitnesses say the pattern is clear: Christians are being targeted.
Faith-based organizations and U.S. lawmakers have been urging Washington for years to restore Nigeria to the CPC list after it was removed in 2021.

Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am hereby making Nigeria a “COUNTRY OF PARTICULAR CONCERN” — But that is the least of it. When Christians, or any such group, is slaughtered like is happening in Nigeria (3,100 versus 4,476 Worldwide), something must be done! I am asking Congressman Riley Moore, together with Chairman Tom Cole and the House Appropriations Committee, to immediately look into this matter, and report back to me. The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria, and numerous other Countries. We stand ready, willing, and able to save our Great Christian population around the World!
