We have experienced a fire in the Historic Sanctuary.

To our knowledge, no one is hurt or injured, and we thank God for His protection. He is sovereign even in the most difficult times.

Crews were dispatched to the church on the junction of San Jacinto and North Ervay Street shortly after 6 PM CT.

When first responders came, they encountered thick smoke.

It started as a 2-alarm fire, but swiftly escalated to 4 alarms.

A 2nd alarm was ordered at 6:20 PM CT.

Things appeared to be mostly under control until the flames restarted at 6:30 PM CT, following the partial collapse.

Dozens of firefighters are on the site, attempting to control the flames and pushing people back to safety.

Residents are advised to avoid the area.

First Baptist Dallas was founded in 1868, but the red brick structure known as the historic sanctuary was not completed until 1890, according to the Texas Historic Commission.

It is the only downtown Dallas church that remains on its original site.

In 1968, the church received a historical marker.
