A thankful and sometimes defiant Donald Trump told The Post Sunday that he’s “supposed to be dead” as he described the terrifying moment a would-be assassin shot him at a Pennsylvania campaign rally.
During an interview aboard his private plane en route to Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention, the former president described the “very surreal experience” that almost killed him.
“The doctor at the hospital said he never saw anything like this, he called it a miracle.”
– Trump added, wearing a loose, huge white bandage around his right ear.
His staff insisted that no photographs be taken.
“I’m not supposed to be here, I’m supposed to be dead. I’m supposed to be dead.”

He claimed he would be if he had not turned his head slightly to the right to read a chart about illegal immigrants.
At that point, what should have been a fatal shot ripped off a small piece of his ear and sprayed blood across his forehead and cheek.
Trump said that as Secret Service agents brought him off stage, he wanted to continue speaking to supporters, but the agents told him it was not safe and that they needed to take him to the hospital.
He marveled at how the agents rushed in like “linebackers” as soon as the gunfire began, and he unbuttoned his white long sleeve shirt, revealing a massive bruise on his right forearm.
He also cleared up a mystery surrounding his shoes.
In the video of the shooting and aftermath, as the burly agents attempted to push him off the stage for safety, he can be heard shouting, “Wait, I want to get my shoes.”
As he stated in the interview,
“The agents hit me so hard that my shoes fell off, and my shoes are tight.”
– Former US President Donald Trump smiled
He complimented the Secret Service troops for their gallant efforts, including firing down the shooter, who was situated on a roof approximately 130 yards from the platform where Trump spoke.
Trump also addressed the incredible photograph of him raising his fist and yelling “Fight” 3 times as agents attempted to get him off stage and into an armored SUV.
“A lot of people say it’s the most iconic photo they’ve ever seen. They’re right and I didn’t die. Usually you have to die to have an iconic picture.”
“I just wanted to keep speaking, but I just got shot.”

The doctor at the local hospital, which has a trauma center, informed him he had never seen anyone survive being shot by an AR-15, Trump recalled.
“By luck or by God, many people are saying it’s by God I’m still here.”

1 man was fatally shot at the rally, while 2 others were injured.
When asked if he had considered attending the burial of Corey Comperatore, a firefighter who died sheltering his family from the killer’s gunshots, Trump responded yes.
Then, turning to his staff:
“Get the numbers, I want to go to the hospital and call all the families.”

Trump also applauded the rally crowd, which he estimated to be 55,000, for remaining calm.
“A lot of places, especially soccer games, you hear a single shot, everybody runs. Here there were many shots and they stayed.”
“I love them. They are such great people.”

Trump’s brush with death had caused him to reconsider the speech he planned to give on Thursday to accept his party’s nomination for the 3rd consecutive time.
He claimed he was preparing a fresh speech because:
“I want to try to unite our country.”

Folding his arms:
“But I don’t know if that’s possible. People are very divided.”
– Former US President Donald Trump
He said he appreciated US President Joe Biden’s call, calling it “fine” and describing Biden as “very nice.”
He suggested, without providing specifics, that the campaign between them could become more civil from now on.
