âIn Florida, a Christian school fight over prayer reached the brink of the Supreme Court. Cambridge Christian School in Tampa⌠and University Christian School in Jacksonville⌠wanted to pray over the PA system before the championship game at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando.
But the Florida High School Athletic Association said âno.â Why? The stadium is publicly funded. The event is state-run. And allowing a prayer over the loudspeaker? That would count as government-endorsed religion.
Undeterred, the Christian schools sued. They argued that denying them the chance to pray violated their First Amendment rightsâtheir freedom of speech and freedom to exercise religion.
The case made its way through the courts. In 2024, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against the schools. The reasoning? The pre-game loudspeaker announcements were classified as government speech, not private speech. The schoolsâ prayer would have appeared to be endorsed by the state.
âItâs important to note: this ruling does not stop Christian schools from praying in generalâit only restricts prayer over the public stadium loudspeaker, which the court classified as government-controlled.â

âNow⌠in November 2025⌠the Supreme Court made a choice that shocked many. They declined to hear the case. No explanation. No dissent. By walking away, the Court let the lower courtâs ruling standâmeaning the restriction on using the loudspeaker for pre-game prayers remains⌠for now.
But hereâs the twist youâve been waiting for: the Florida Legislature responded. They passed a law allowing schools to give brief opening remarks at championship events, which could include a prayer if the school chooses, under certain rules.
So even though the Court said âno,â Christians in Florida might still get a chance to speak boldly on the fieldâunder certain limits.
This raises a key question: when does religious expression in a public-event setting become government speech? And when is it a private act of faith? The answer could affect Christian schools and stadiums nationwide.â
