Chairman Comer Statement on Secret Service Director Cheatle’s Resignation:

“The Oversight Committee’s hearing resulted in Director Cheatle’s resignation and there will be more accountability to come. The Secret Service has a no-fail mission yet it failed historically on Director Cheatle’s watch. At yesterday’s Oversight Committee hearing, Director Cheatle instilled no confidence that she has the ability to ensure the Secret Service can meet its protective mission. Egregious security failures leading up to and at the Butler, Pennsylvania campaign rally resulted in the assassination attempt of President Trump, the murder of an innocent victim, and harm to others in the crowd. While Director Cheatle’s resignation is a step toward accountability, we need a full review of how these security failures happened so that we can prevent them going forward. We will continue our oversight of the Secret Service in support of the House Task Force to deliver transparency, accountability, and solutions to ensure this never happens again.”

Statement from President Joe Biden on United States Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle

Jill and I are grateful to Director Kim Cheatle for her decades of public service. She has selflessly dedicated and risked her life to protect our nation throughout her career in the United States Secret Service. We especially thank her for answering the call to lead the Secret Service during our Administration and we are grateful for her service to our family.

As a leader, it takes honor, courage, and incredible integrity to take full responsibility for an organization tasked with one of the most challenging jobs in public service.

The independent review to get to the bottom of what happened on July 13 continues, and I look forward to assessing its conclusions. We all know what happened that day can never happen again. As we move forward, I wish Kim all the best, and I will plan to appoint a new Director soon.

Kimberly Cheatle, director of the United States Secret Service, resigned after the agency faced criticism for failing to prevent a would-be assassin from wounding former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally, the White House announced on Tuesday.

The Secret Service, which is in charge of protecting current and former US presidents, is in crisis after a gunman opened fire on Trump from a roof above the outdoor rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced that Secret Service Deputy Director Ronald Rowe, a 24-year agency veteran, will serve as acting director.

Multiple congressional committees and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s internal inspector are investigating the Secret Service’s performance.

Biden, who has terminated his reelection campaign, has also advocated for an independent review.

Cheatle faced bipartisan outrage when she testified before the House Oversight Committee on Monday, declining to answer upset legislators’ questions regarding the rally’s security strategy and how law enforcement responded to the gunman’s suspicious behavior.

Several Republican and Democratic lawmakers have called for her resignation.

NBC News was the first to disclose that Cheatle was leaving her position.

Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, was grazed in the right ear, and one rallygoer was killed by gunfire.

A Secret Service sniper shot and killed the gunman, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Crooks.

Cheatle, who has led the agency since 2022, told lawmakers she accepted responsibility for the shooting, calling it the Secret Service’s worst failure since then-President Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981.

House leaders announced on Tuesday that they would form a bipartisan task force to investigate the shooting.

Much of the criticism has centered on the failure to secure the roof of an industrial building where the gunman was stationed around 150 yards (140 meters) from the stage where Trump was speaking.

Former agents and senators have challenged the Secret Service’s decision to declare the rooftop outside the event’s security perimeter.

Cheatle was a prominent security executive at PepsiCo when Biden appointed her Secret Service chief in 2022.

She had previously spent 27 years with the agency.

She took office following a series of scandals involving the Secret Service, which tarnished the agency’s reputation as aristocratic and insular.

10 Secret Service agents lost their jobs after it was revealed that they brought women, some of whom were prostitutes, back to their hotel rooms ahead of then-President Barack Obama’s trip to Colombia in 2012.

The agency was also accused of erasing text messages from around the time of the January 6, 2021 attack on the United States Capitol.

A congressional subcommittee looking into the riot later sought these messages.
