Hi everyone,

“Gay marriage in church is inevitable, I think: the question is when,” says ‘Archbishop’ Cherry Vann, the first openly homosexual and female ‘archbishop’ in the UK.

Her statement has triggered global reactions from the Anglican Church, ‘LGBTQ+ faith leaders’, and conservative factions.

Cherry Vann, who leads the Church in Wales is no stranger to bold, history-making moments. Her interview is seen by many as a turning point in the global Christian conversation on LGBTQ+ rights.

In her August 3, 2025 Guardian interview, Vann affirmed that same‑sex marriage in church is unavoidable.

However, she emphasized her cautious stance as a leader:

“There are people who are very opposed, and as leader, I have to honor their position, which is theologically grounded.”

While supportive in principle, she clarified that she will not actively campaign for it, in order to avoid alienating a significant proportion of clergy.

Under Vann’s leadership, the Church in Wales has already moved to bless same‑sex civil partnerships since 2021. The church still does not perform same‑sex marriages, but these blessings are permitted.

Her role suggests broader institutional momentum toward fuller inclusion, aligning with long-held sentiment within the church’s leadership.

Vann’s commitment to inclusion and reconciliatory leadership is reshaping the Church in Wales. Her past advocacy within the Open Table Network shows her long-standing support for “LGBTQ+ Christians.”

Globally, her stance reflects the growing divide in Anglicanism between more liberal provinces (like Wales) and conservative ones (such as the Church of Nigeria and some factions in England).
