Simon Pearson (56), an ESOL teacher at Preston College in Lancashire, UK was fired after posting on social media that although Lucy Connolly’s comments were “obviously wrong,” she “should not have been jailed.” He contended that her 31‑month sentence reflected “two‑tier policing.” The post prompted a complaint by a Muslim NEU representative who called it “Islamophobic” and “racially discriminatory”

College investigators concluded that the post could harm the college’s reputation and violated policy. Despite Pearson’s apology and history supporting Muslim students and asylum seekers, he was terminated. Pearson has since filed unfair dismissal claims under the Equality Act 2010.

Opponents believe the dismissal is a chilling suppression of lawful political speech, especially given that Pearson was not endorsing Connolly’s views but rather questioning the severity of her punishment.

In July 2024, Lucy Connolly posted a widely criticized tweet calling for “mass deportation” and arson of asylum‑seeker hotels during the Southport child stabbings. She deleted the post within four hours, but it had already been viewed ~310,000 times. Convicted under Section 19 of the Public Order Act 1986 for incitement to racial hatred, she was sentenced to 31 months in October 2024 at Birmingham Crown Court after pleading guilty.

In May 2025, the Court of Appeal upheld the sentence, ruling it was not “manifestly excessive,” despite appeals citing her clean criminal record, remorse, deletion of post, and personal mitigating factors including the death of her toddler child due to a hospital error.

High-profile figures like Suella Braverman, Liz Truss, and Reform UK’s Richard Tice have called her sentence “excessive” and advocated for her release. Tice has also backed the proposed “Lucy’s Law,” which would allow the public to challenge perceived harsh or unfair sentences.

Pearson’s case highlights the tension between exercising freedom of expression on public issues and institutional policies governing reputation and inclusion.

Connolly’s sentence—especially compared to lighter outcomes for more serious offenders—has intensified debate about the consistency, fairness, and public trust in UK sentencing standards.

Efforts such as “Lucy’s Bill” seek to increase the public’s ability to appeal controversial judicial outcomes, highlighting concerns about perceived political influence over sentencing decisions.
