As the school year begins, an 80-strong gathering was organized outside the campus building, where the university president met with activists for the discussion debate on probable Israel divestment.
Anti-Israel protestors at Harvard University marched through campus on Friday, three days after classes reopened, chanting “Long live the intifada” and “Globalize the intifada,” signaling that the summer break did little to calm tensions over Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza.
The chants related to devastating Palestinian terror attacks on Israeli civilians in the late 1980s and early 1990s, as well as in the early 2000s, during which hundreds of Israelis died.
The protest was held under heavy police presence, the Harvard Crimson reported.
According to the university newspaper, the 80-strong march, organized by the group Harvard Out of Occupied Palestine, culminated in a rally outside a campus building where interim university president Alan Garber met with HOOP leaders to discuss their demand that Harvard divest from Israel.
Garber had agreed to hold the meeting in May as part of his efforts to broker a peaceful resolution to the university’s pro-Palestinian encampment.
Speakers at the event reportedly criticized the university’s decision to penalize certain students who took part in the camping.
According to the Crimson, 5 students at the 20-day encampment were suspended, while more than 20 were placed on probation.
During the war in Gaza sparked by Hamas’ October 7 rampage into southern Israel, which killed 1,200 people and kidnapped 251, Harvard and other prestigious US universities have emerged as hotbeds of anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian activism.
Hours after the bombing, approximately 30 Harvard undergraduate groups stated that Israel was solely responsible for the horrific terror assault.
Harvard’s antisemitic task panel reported in June that Israeli students at the Ivy League campus faced “dire” exclusion.
