CHRISTIAN BREAKING NEWS: Christian Reformed Churches Synod to LGBTQ-Affirming Churches: Repent or Leave
Christian Reformed churches that affirm LGBTQ people must repent or leave, according to the denomination.
This year’s Christian Reformed Church in North America Synod, the denomination’s annual assembly, saw delegates and church leaders gather at Calvin University in Grand Rapids, MI throughout the week.
This year’s Synod, as the previous 2 years, focused primarily on the position of LGBTQ+ community members in the denomination.
In 2022, Synod voted to uphold its position that same-sex relationships are sinful, but having attractions for the same sex is not sinful.
The denomination decided to make its position a confessional issue, or a core belief.
This means that office-bearers, including as pastors, deacons, and elders, as well as CRC school faculty, must believe that LGBTQ+ partnerships are sinful and cannot engage in same-sex relationships themselves.
Even yet, some churches continued to affirm LGBTQ+ people, and office-bearers might file a notification (known as a confessional-difficulty gravamen) declaring their disagreement with the church’s position.
This year, the CRC Synod resolved to initiate a disciplinary process for affirming churches.
These churches must publicly repent and withdraw their affirming comments, or they must leave the denomination.
If the churches do neither, they will be removed from fellowship with the denomination.
