On October 16, 2025, the Church of Norway issued an apology to the LGBTQ+ community for decades of discrimination and exclusion.
Presiding Bishop Olav Fykse Tveit delivered the apology at London Pub in Oslo, a prominent LGBTQ+ venue and site of the tragic 2022 Pride shooting, acknowledging that the church had caused “shame, great harm, and pain.”
For decades, the church excluded LGBTQ+ individuals from ordination and refused to recognize same-sex unions — actions that aligned with biblical teaching on marriage. Yet in recent years, the Church of Norway began ordaining gay pastors in 2007 and allowed same-sex church marriages in 2017, moving in a direction that conflicts with Scripture.
While some may welcome the apology, Christian believers must remember: God’s Word defines marriage as between a man and a woman, and no cultural trend can change that truth.
This story is a reminder that churches can repent for past wrongs, but they must also remain faithful to biblical teaching, not cultural pressure.
