Luke Ash, lead pastor of Stevendale Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was terminated from his part-time library job at the East Baton Rouge Parish Library on July 10, 2025. His reason for refusal was declining to use a transgender coworker’s preferred pronouns, citing his Christian beliefs regarding human sexuality.
Following his dismissal, Liberty Counsel, a nonprofit legal organization specializing in religious freedom, sent a demand letter on October 17, 2025, stating that Ash’s termination violated the First Amendment, the Louisiana Constitution, the Louisiana Protection of Religious Freedom Act, and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Liberty Counsel requested that the library reinstate Pastor Ash with back pay and amend its pronoun policy to respect the religious beliefs of all employees. The library has until November 10, 2025 to respond.
The library’s inclusivity policy allows employees to choose their pronouns but does not address conflicts with religious beliefs, putting employees like Pastor Ash in a legal and moral dilemma. Religious leaders nationwide are closely watching this case, emphasizing that the government should not force individuals to express beliefs that contradict their faith, especially when it isn’t essential to their job.
This is more than a workplace dispute. It is a battle over religious liberty, free speech, and the limits of government mandates.

Now we want to hear from you. Should Christians be forced to compromise their beliefs at work, or should faith always come first?
Type FAITH if you believe religious conviction must never be silenced, or type RULES if you think government policies should take priority. Comment below, your voice could inspire other Christians to stand firm in their faith.
