Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared victory for his alliance after early results from the phased, 6-week election showed his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning fewer seats than projected and seemed unlikely to earn a majority on its own.
Final results are not expected until Wednesday local time, and counting continues late into the night.
After winning a record 303 seats in 2019, Modi’s BJP was unlikely to win more than 240, well short of the 272 required to establish a majority government alone.
The National Democratic Alliance (ND), led by Modi’s party, appears to be track to gain a combined 286-seat majority.
In a speech to supporters, Modi claimed victory for his alliance, describing the election as a big gain despite the opposition’s stronger-than-expected challenge.
