According to new census data, a majority of people in Scotland say they are not religious.

In the 2022 census, 51.1% of respondents reported having “no religion,” up from 36.7% in 2011.

The shift was fueled by a decline in Christianity, particularly among Protestants.

While the Church of Scotland remains the largest Christian denomination, its membership has halved in a decade.

Only a fifth of Scots (20.4%) currently identify with the Church of Scotland, which has lost a million followers since the beginning of the 21st century.

The number of Roman Catholics has similarly declined, falling by more than 117,000 over the last decade to 13.3% of the population.

Over the same time period, the Muslim population grew by 43,100 to 119,872, rising from 1.4% to 2.2% of the total.
