Pastor Chapman was born on November 21, 1940, in Kosciusko, Mississippi. He graduated from Mississippi College in 1963 and earned both a Master of Divinity and a Doctor of Ministry from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.
He served as pastor in several churches over 25 years, including First Baptist Church in Rogers, Texas from 1967 to 1969, First Baptist Church of Woodway in Waco, Texas from 1969 to 1974, First Baptist Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico from 1974 to 1979 where he also served as president of the New Mexico Baptist Convention from 1976 to 1978, and First Baptist Church in Wichita Falls, Texas from 1979 to 1992, growing it into one of the largest churches in the SBC.
In 1992, Pastor Chapman became president and CEO of the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee, a role he held until 2010. Under his leadership, the SBC achieved record-high Cooperative Program giving and he became a central figure in the Conservative Resurgence, returning the denomination to its theological roots.

Pastor Chapman was also an accomplished author. His works include Jesus: Author and Finisher, The Wedding Collection: 26 Basic Wedding Ceremonies for Pastors, and Faith: Taking God at His Word. These books continue to inspire pastors and believers across the world.
Even after retirement, he remained a trusted voice for churches nationwide. Pastor Chapman was married to Jodi, and together they had two children, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. His influence extended far beyond his family, shaping the lives of countless Christians.
Following his passing, his son Chris Chapman shared a heartfelt message on social media: My dad peacefully stepped into Heaven this morning. He was not just my dad, but my hero, my teacher and my pastor. I miss him already, but he’ll always be a part of who I am and someday we’ll meet again. This personal note reminds us of the deep love and legacy he leaves behind.
