Former Mexico City mayor wins 58% of the vote, National Electoral Institute announces, confirming earlier exit polls showing she beat key rival Xochitl Galvez
Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo was elected Mexico’s first female president by a landslide on Sunday, according to preliminary official results, making history in a country plagued by widespread criminal and gender-based violence.
In Mexico City’s main square, crowds of flag-waving supporters sang and danced to mariachi music to celebrate the victory of the ruling party candidate.
In her first statements after being confirmed as the winner, Sheinbaum promised not to let Mexico down.
The 61-year-old former Mexico City mayor, who is a scientist by profession, received approximately 58-60 percent of the vote, according to the National Electoral Institute, following a rapid count.
That was more than 30 percentage points ahead of her major opponent, Xochitl Galvez, and around 50 points ahead of the only man running, long-shot centrist Jorge Alvarez Maynez.
Voters went to polling centers around the Latin American country, amid sporadic bloodshed in areas plagued by ultra-violent drug cartels.
Thousands of troops were deployed to protect voters during a particularly deadly electoral process that saw more than 2 dozen aspiring local leaders assassinated.
Earlier, Sheinbaum praised a “historic” election day.
After casting her ballot, the presidential front-runner stated that she voted for Ifigenia Martinez, a 93-year-old veteran leftist, in recognition of her struggle.
Mexican women who went to the polls celebrated the prospected of a woman breaking the greatest political glass ceiling in a country where approximately 10 women or girls are murdered each day.
Nearly 100 million people were registered to vote in the world’s most populous Spanish-speaking country, with 129 million people.
Sheinbaum owes most of her popularity to outgoing President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, a fellow leftist and mentor with an approval rating of more than 60% but is only allowed a one-term limit.
Sheinbaum, a scientist turned politician, was born to Jewish immigrants from Lithuania and Bulgaria.
Her most prominent reference to her Judaism came in 2018 during a speech she gave at a Jewish community event while serving as mayor of Mexico City.
She did not identify as Jewish, but stated that both her parents were “of Jewish origin.”
She practices her faith secularly, as do many Mexican Jews.
Sheinbaum has pledged to maintain the outgoing president’s controversial “hugs not bullets” campaign for addressing crime at its source.
Since 2006, when the government deployed the army to combat drug trafficking, nearly 450,000 people have been murdered and tens of thousands have gone missing.
The new president will also have to navigate delicate relations with the neighboring United States, particularly the contentious issues of cross-border drug smuggling and migration.
In addition to electing a new president, Mexicans voted for members of Congress, many state governors, and numerous local leaders, totaling over 20,000 positions.
