Today, a major legal battle is erupting in Texas classrooms.
On November 18th, U.S. District Judge Orlando L. Garcia issued a preliminary injunction stopping several public school districts from displaying the Ten Commandments — posters they had installed or were preparing to install under Texas Senate Bill 10.
The lawsuit, Cribbs Ringer v. Comal ISD, was filed by 15 multifaith and nonreligious families who argued their children were being subjected to unwanted religious messages in school.
Judge Garcia agreed.
He ruled that displaying the Ten Commandments “violates the Establishment Clause,” and that it would be “impractical, if not impossible,” to protect students from these religious displays without halting the law’s enforcement.
This comes after another judge, in a separate case earlier this year, also called the law “plainly unconstitutional.”
