CHRISTIAN BREAKING NEWS: 📉⛪💪 Under Pressure, Still Standing: Churches Face Economic Strain but Faith Endures

A new Lifeway Research report reveals that nearly half of U.S. pastors say the economy is hurting their churches. Small congregations are struggling, yet giving has still risen slightly—proof that God’s people remain faithful. Even in hardship, the Church continues to stand, adapt, and trust in divine provision.

They shepherd our faith communities, yet nearly half of America’s pastors, 49 percent, say the economy is putting their churches under pressure. Offerings are shrinking, budgets tightening, but even in these storms, many are still standing strong in faith. Could this be a warning sign or proof that God still provides when times are tough?

A new Lifeway Research report reveals nearly 49 percent of Protestant pastors feel the economy is negatively impacting their churches. Forty-one percent say it has no impact, and only nine percent report a positive effect.
When it comes to offerings, 46 percent of pastors say giving is about what was budgeted, 27 percent report offerings below budget, yet 37 percent say giving is higher than last year. A modest rise, but a testament to resilience. Even in uncertainty, God’s people are still giving, sustaining ministries, and keeping hope alive. It’s a story of struggle and perseverance, scarcity and supply, human weakness and divine strength.

Smaller congregations under 100 members struggle the most, while larger churches weather the storm more easily. Offering changes in 2025 show contrasts. Some churches saw modest increases, others faced declines. Overall, the average giving rose two percent this year, showing God’s provision even amid economic pressure.
Demographic differences reveal more. African American pastors, 41 percent report giving lower than budgeted. Male pastors, 28 percent higher than budget, female pastors only 16 percent. Pastors in the Northeast, 58 percent report negative impact. Rural pastors, 50 percent report no economic impact, compared to 39 percent in urban areas. Across the data, one truth shines: “We’re hurting, but we’re not giving up.”
