Melania Trump, Donald Trump’s wife, stated in a video on Thursday that there was “no room for compromise” on a woman’s right to “individual freedom” – a position on abortion rights that appears to contradict her husband’s, the Republican US presidential candidate.
Her remarks come as Trump and his running mate, US Senator JD Vance, have worked to soften the hard edges of the Republican Party’s abortion policy, which is a major barrier to winning over female voters ahead of the Nov. 5 election.
“Individual freedom is a fundamental principle that I safeguard,” she says in the video she uploaded on X to promote her memoir, which will be released next week.
“Without a doubt, there is no room for compromise when it comes to this essential right that all women possess from birth, individual freedom. What does ‘my body, my choice’ really mean?”
Melania Trump, a former model who served as first lady from 2017 to 2021 and has been generally absent from the campaign trail, has a history of making cryptic public pronouncements.
On a journey to the US border in 2018, she donned a jacket with the motto “I really don’t care, do you?” without explanation.
However, in an excerpt from her memoir published on Wednesday by the British website the Guardian, she was more open about her views on abortion rights.
“A woman’s fundamental right of individual liberty, to her own life, grants her the authority to terminate her pregnancy if she wishes,” she wrote.
Trump had previously taken credit for appointing 3 US Supreme Court judges that helped overturn Roe v. Wade, the key abortion rights case, in 2022.
However, since winning the Republican primary earlier this year, he has worked to take a more nuanced approach to the subject in order to gain the support of moderate and independent voters.
He has criticized six-week abortion bans as overly restrictive, stated that he would not support a countrywide ban on the operation, and advocated for exceptions to any ban to include incidences of rape and incest or to preserve the mother’s health.
During the vice presidential debate on Tuesday, as Vance attempted to temper his own hard stance on the topic, Trump said online that he would veto any attempt by Congress to impose a countrywide ban.
However, Trump has also stated that individual states have the right to restrict abortion as they see fit, even if it means severely restricting access, and numerous Republican-controlled states have done so.
During a rally last month, Trump stated that if elected, women “will no longer be thinking about abortion.”
His Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, has emphasized her support for abortion rights and called for the full restoration of constitutional protections.
