PRESS RELEASE
OF THE DICASTERY FOR THE DOCTRINE OF THE FAITHOn 4 July 2024, the Congress of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith met to conclude the extrajudicial penal process referred to in canon 1720 CIC against the Most Reverend Carlo Maria Viganò, titular Archbishop of Ulpiana, accused of the reserved delict of schism (canons 751 and 1364 CIC; art. 2 SST).
His public statements manifesting his refusal to recognize and submit to the Supreme Pontiff, his rejection of communion with the members of the Church subject to him, and of the legitimacy and magisterial authority of the Second Vatican Council are well known.
At the conclusion of the penal process, the Most Reverend Carlo Maria Viganò was found guilty of the reserved delict of schism.
The Dicastery declared the latae sententiae excommunication in accordance with canon 1364 § 1 CIC.
The lifting of the censure in these cases is reserved to the Apostolic See.
This decision was communicated to the Most Reverend Viganò on 5 July 2024.

This is the text of the decree that was sent to me via email today at 1:14 pm Italian time. What was attributed to me as guilt for my conviction is now put on the record, confirming the Catholic Faith that I fully profess.

I say to my brother Bishops: “If you are silent, the stones will cry out” (Lk 19:40).
The Vatican has excommunicated an Italian archbishop who is a staunch critic of Pope Francis, according to its doctrinal office.
Carlo Maria Vigano was found guilty of schism, which means he separated from the Catholic Church, following years of bitter disagreement with the pontiff.
The 83-year-old ultra-conservative has already called for the Pope’s resignation, accusing him of heresy and condemning his positions on immigration, climate change, and same-sex couples.
Archbishop Vigano was a prominent figure in the Church, serving as papal envoy to Washington from 2011 until 2016.
In 2018, he went into hiding after alleging that the Pope was aware of sexual abuse by an American cardinal but did nothing.
The Vatican denied the accusation.
Over time, the archbishop became affiliated with US conspiracy theorists, criticizing Covid vaccinations and asserting a “globalist” and “anti-Christian” project by the UN and other parties, both of which are common conspiratorial themes.
On Friday, the Vatican’s doctrinal office stated that his refusal to bow to Pope Francis was evident from his public statements.
“The Most Reverend Carlo Maria Vigano was found guilty of the reserved delict [violation of the law] of schism,” the statement said, adding that he had been excommunicated – or banished from the church.
The archbishop responded with a post on X, linking to the decree that was emailed to him and saying:
“What was attributed to me as guilt for my conviction is now put on record, confirming the Catholic Faith that I fully profess.”
Last month, Archbishop Vigano was charged with schism and denial of the pope’s legitimacy.
At the time, he wrote on X that he considered the charges against him “an honor.”
“I repudiate, reject, and condemn the scandals, errors, and heresies of Jorge Mario Bergoglio,” he declared, using the Argentine Pope’s given name.
Pope Francis has alienated traditionalist Catholics by embracing the LGBTQ+ community, advocating for migrant rights, and decrying capitalism’s abuses.
Last year, Francis fired another ultra-conservative opponent, Bishop Joseph E Strickland of Texas, who refused to resign following an investigation.
