Rev. Dr. Nelson Price, the longtime Pastor Emeritus of Roswell Street Baptist Church in Marietta, Georgia, has passed at the age of 94.

For 35 years, he faithfully led one of America’s earliest megachurches, growing its membership from 700 to nearly 10,000. Beyond the pulpit, he was a mentor, counselor, and community leader, who baptized, married and guided thousands of people.

His influence extended to national leaders like President Jimmy Carter and Governor Roy Barnes.

A prolific author of 32 books, Dr. Price also preached at President Jimmy Carter’s inauguration, leaving behind a powerful legacy of faith, leadership, and service.

He is remembered as a husband, father, and ,spiritual giant whose impact will endure for generations.

Known as a visionary leader, mentor, and community figure, Dr. Price transformed Roswell Street into one of America’s earliest megachurches, growing its membership from 700 members to nearly 10,000 during his 35 years as pastor.

He baptized, counseled, and married thousands, while also writing weekly columns for the Marietta Daily Journal for nearly 60 years.

Dr. Price became a mentor to youth, a comfort to families, and a trusted advisor to leaders, including President Jimmy Carter and Governor Roy Barnes. His influence extended far beyond the pulpit.

He was deeply committed to the community, engaging with young people through sports and schools, and helped lead the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Dr. Price was a national hero who preached at President Jimmy Carter’s inauguration, wrote 32 books, and had a seminary building named after him. Friends compared him to Billy Graham for his influence.

President Jimmy Carter once called him the “Baptist preacher who wears alligator shoes.” Former Governor Roy Barnes called him as “the Baptist Pope.”

Dr. Price, a Mississippi native, served churches in Louisiana before moving to Marietta in 1965. Married to his wife Trudy for 70 years, he credited her as his partner in ministry.

He reflected that his greatest life lesson was to be authentic and true to himself, attributing all success to God’s work through him. His legacy of faith, leadership, and community impact lives on in Cobb County and beyond.
