On October 17, 2025, the Supreme Court of India dismissed multiple complaints filed under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021 against officials of Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences (SHUATS).
SHUATS, founded by Christian missionary Dr. Sam Higginbottom, has a long history of serving rural communities with education grounded in Christian ethical principles, though it welcomes students of all faiths.
The case, ongoing since April 2022, arose from allegations of unlawful religious conversions at the university. The claims reportedly came from a disgruntled employee and a former student who had been expelled.
The Supreme Court found serious procedural flaws in the complaints, noting that the complainant was not legally eligible to file under the law, which requires complaints to come from someone directly “aggrieved”—usually a family member.

Do you think anti-conversion laws are being misused to target Christian institutions, or are they necessary for society? Let us know in the comments!

The court also criticized the Uttar Pradesh government’s involvement, raising concerns about potential misuse of the law to harass individuals. Legal experts say this ruling could set an important precedent, protecting educational and religious institutions from baseless allegations in the future.
University officials welcomed the decision, calling it a vindication for academic freedom and religious tolerance. Students and staff can now focus on their education without fear of harassment.

Now it’s your turn—do you believe faith should always be protected in education, or should laws intervene in cases of religious conversion? Type FAITH if you trust in protection for religious freedom, or LAW if you think regulations are necessary.
