Donald Trump told a gathering of evangelicals that they “cannot afford to sit on the sidelines” during the 2024 election, asking them to “go and vote, Christians, please!”

Trump also supported displaying the Ten Commandments in schools and other places when speaking to a group of politically important evangelical Christians in Washington on Saturday.

He earned applause as he cited a new law adopted in Louisiana this week that requires the Ten Commandments to be displayed in every public school classroom.

The former president and presumptive Republican presidential nominee supported the move as he seeks to galvanize his religious right supporters, who have fiercely supported him despite initially being skeptical of the twice-divorced New York City tabloid celebrity when he first ran for president in 2016.

That support has persisted despite his conviction in the first of 4 criminal cases against him, in which a jury last month found him guilty of falsifying business records in an attempt to conceal a hush money payment to porn actor Stormy Daniels just before the 2016 election.

Daniels alleges that she had a sexual encounter with Trump a decade ago, which he denies.

Trump’s stated opposition to signing a nationwide abortion ban, as well as his reluctance to detail some of his views on the issue, have alienated many members of the evangelical movement, a key component of Trump’s base that is expected to help him turn out voters in his November rematch with Democratic President Joe Biden.

While many members of the movement would like to see him do more to restrict abortion, they regard him as the most powerful advocate for the cause because of his involvement in nominating U.S. Supreme Court justices who reversed national abortion rights in 2022.

While Trump still claims credit for overturning Roe v. Wade, he has warned that abortion can be politically hard for Republicans.

For months, he dodged questions about his views on a nationwide ban.

Last year, when Trump spoke to the Faith & Freedom Coalition, he stated that the federal government plays a “vital role in protecting unborn life,” but provided no further information.

In April of this year, Trump stated that the issue should be left to the states.

He then declared in an interview that if Congress passes a countrywide abortion ban, he will not sign it.

He has yet to clarify his view on women’s access to the abortion pill mifepristone.

According to last year’s Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll, over two-thirds of Americans believe abortion should be allowed in general.

Attendees at Saturday’s evangelical meeting stated that, while they would like to see a national abortion ban, Trump’s solid support is intact.

Beyond simply supporting Trump in the general election, the Faith & Freedom Coalition intends to help get out the vote for him and other Republicans by knocking on millions of doors in battleground states with volunteers and paid workers.
