Throughout National Foster Care Month, we acknowledge the quiet sacrifice of foster families across America—and the priceless value of the children they serve. These kids and families deserve our care and support.
Sadly, at ADF, we’re increasingly seeing the opposite. Loving families like Shane and Jenn DeGross, who served as foster parents in Washington state for 9 years, are now losing their licenses under new policies based in gender ideology.
Quite simply, these policies discriminate against religious families. They’re unconstitutional.
But more than that: they hurt kids. Gender ideology shouldn’t keep kids from having a safe place to sleep—or a loving mom and dad.
We’re standing with families like Shane & Jenn in court. We’re also working with legislatures to protect kids and families from policies like the one in Washington state.
During National Foster Care Month, we call on states to refocus on what kids need most: a safe, loving home.
New regulations mandate parents to use pronouns for children based on ‘gender identity’
A couple has filed a lawsuit against Washington State officials, accusing them of denying their foster care renewal license because they refuse to follow gender ideology guidelines that contradict their Christian beliefs.
During an appearance on “America’s Newsroom,” Shane Degross stated that when going through the re-licensing process, he discovered new restrictions and rules that were not present in previous years.
According to his wife, Jennifer DeGross, one of the restrictions required the couple to follow specific policies regarding “gender ideology.”
Alliance Defending Freedom, which represents the couple, stated that when they attempted to renew their license with Olive Crest, they were informed that the Washington Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) had enacted new regulations “that require all foster parents to use a foster child’s inaccurate pronouns based on their perceived gender identity, not their actual sex.”
The restrictions also allegedly force parents to accompany their children to “cultural events,” such as pride parades.
Despite Olive Crest’s repeated appeals, officials at DCYF allegedly denied their application.
Christian Kiefer, senior attorney for ADF, told co-host Dana Perino that Washington State is adopting a “ideological litmus test” to unconstitutionally exclude persons of faith from the foster care system.
For more than 9 years, the couple has been licensed to care for children ages 2 to 18.
They claimed that they could only care for a toddler if they followed the updated licensing procedures.
