During the Church of England’s General Synod in York on 11 July 2025, the Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, took a firm stand against the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, currently under consideration in the House of Lords. He warned that legalizing assisted dying would shift the sanctity of life—changing the doctor-patient relationship, pressuring vulnerable people, and assuming a power that “belongs to God alone.”

Cottrell also urged the church to counter utilitarian trends and advocate for improved palliative care.

The bill seeks to allow terminally ill adults with under six months to live to seek assisted dying—pending medical and legal safeguards.
